Thanks to the invitation from Chiara Canali, I gave the online talk “Evolution of Digital Art.” Paths from the past to the future” for the Fondazione Matera-Basilicata 2019, AIRFARE project – Digital Artistic Curation, funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU, of which Chiara Canali is the scientific director.
In an era of continuous transformation, digital art and artificial intelligence are redefining the role of the curator, opening new perspectives for the enjoyment, preservation, and interpretation of artistic and cultural heritage. This series of meetings, also open to the public, was created with the intent of exploring this evolution through the contributions of critics, art historians, artists, and international curators.
With an interdisciplinary approach, the program examines the digitalisation of historical-artistic heritage, the new frontiers of artistic creation, and the future of curation in an increasingly technological context, offering a broad and interdisciplinary perspective. Curating digital art means rethinking the modes of narration and mediation, experimenting with new forms of archiving and dissemination, and understanding the dialogue between the artist and the technological system.
My presentation traced the evolution of digital art forms from their emergence in the 1960s to the present day, showcasing their developments and opening up scenarios for the future.
The journey illustrated poetics, themes, expressive modes, and technologies that transform the “work of art” and the figures of the “artist” and the “viewer,” presenting works that have changed the ways of creating, experiencing, understanding, and communicating art, expanding its boundaries, producing innovation, and generating new visions of the world.
